The Professional Awards

One of the important objectives stated in the Memorandum of the Association is to grant Diplomas and Certificates of competency to the persons working in the Textile Industry by examination or by application, the awards of associateship and fellowship of the Textile Association were instituted in 1946 to promote textile education in India by creating opportUnities for persons working in the textile industry to improve their professional knowledge and skills. These awards aim at securing a class of persons who will be recognised as competent and proficient technologists with experience in one selected branch of the textile industry viz. spinning, weaving, chemical and textile testing and quality control. The emphasis, is preferably more on application of knowledge to the problem of the industry than on gaining of knowledge alone.

Nature of Awards
  • Associateships (ATA):
  • 1) By Examination

Under this category the award 'Associateship of the Textile Association (ATA)' is given on the basis of examinations in two parts. The candidate who prepares for the First Part (ATA Part-I) Examination is expected to familiarise himself with the general textile processes and machines. For the second Part (ATA Part-II) Examination specialisation in any one of Optional Groups, out of Spinning, Weaving, Chemical Processing and nations though candidates are expected to have a general background of processes of commonly used fibres such as cotton and its blends. For Part-II members of proficiency aimed at in the ATA Part-II Examination is equivalent to that achieved in a good diploma course, as far as the specialised areas mentioned above are concerned. Being a professional award, the emphasis on mastery of basic science is understanding less, while the stress is on application of the basic sciences to technology of textile manufacturing. the conditions for ATA awards by examinations are given in Regulations No. 1 to 16

    2) Direct Award by Application
    • Based on Technical qualification and Industrial Experience: Persons with technical qualifications and experience are entitled for the Associateship without appearing for the examinations. The conditions for such awards are given in Regulation No.17.
    • Based on Long-standing Industrial Experience and Position as a Head of Department: Persons without technical qualifications but with long experience and occupying responsible positions for a long period can also apply for consideration of Direct ATA award without having to appear for the examinations, as candidates under Special Category ATA award. The conditions for such awards are given in Regulation No. 18.
    • It may be clearly noted that ATA pass by examination is recognized by Govt. of India (see appendix A of Handbook) for purposes of recruitment to subordinate post and services under central Govt. is appropriate field and not for higher studies. ATA pass by examination is awarded by The Textile Association (India) which is recognized as the highest textile professional body in India having more than 20, 000 members in 27 units across the country. ATA pass by examination is only a document vouching for person's proficiency in textile. ATA by examination is not equivalent to any full time Diploma course in textile. It may be noted that the Diploma in textile is a three years full time study with minimum of 20 to 30 subjects with sandwich in-plant training where as in ATA there are only 8 subjects with sufficient industrial experience as background. Realising this gap shortly PAC is trying to upgrade ATA to three years distance learning course with 20 to 24 subjects to improve their professional knowledge and skill in textile field. Little later it can be put forward Directorate of Technical Education to recognized ATA pass as equivalent to any other textile Diploma course for not only job opportunities but also for higher studies.
    • FTA and ATA Direct Award by application is only a recognition of the proficiency of the textile technology by The Textile Association (India) and is not considered as a document for claiming for any recruitment or higher study purposes.
